Chapter 4

Office De-clutter

There’s a saying that goes, “It’s the little things that make up for the big things”. Looking at your office from a minimalist’s perspective, consider the office supplies you’ve accumulated over the years such as pencils, paperclips, markers, envelopes, and staples, etc. Check out the little things that you are hesitant to throw out; the items that you “think” you might need in the future.

If you are going to be honest with yourself, you don’t need a box full of postal stamps or envelopes. You don’t have to purchase boxes of supplies, even if you have to work in your office daily. There are some things that you probably “need” to purchase in bundles but the other things aren’t just as important.

Here are some effective strategies on how you can minimize your office supplies:

1. Minimize incoming mails. Unsubscribe from mailing lists that are not important to you. Cancel your magazine or newspaper subscriptions. You may also want to opt for online statements and billing to avoid further mail clutter.

2. Digitize your paperwork, if possible. You don’t have to keep the documents in paper if you can save them in your computer. Keeping the soft copies will allow you to save important details without the paper clutter.

3. Downsize your office supplies such as paperclips, folders, envelopes, and papers. You probably need these supplies, but you don’t have to buy them in bulk. You should only purchase just enough office supplies for your needs.

4. Invest only on significant office machines. Don’t buy everything you see in the market. For example, you don’t need to purchase a top-of-the-line color printer when you mostly just need to print documents in black and white.

Clearing your office from clutter is like home de-cluttering: it can be daunting and overwhelming. If you are having difficulty in deciding what to keep and what to eliminate, ask yourself the following questions:

•How often do I use this?

•How much do I really need?

•Is there a way I could re-use or re-cycle something?

•If I’m using this thing once in a blue moon, can I borrow it from someone else?

Your answers will help you determine the importance of your office supplies and machines. Keep your office clean and clear from unnecessary supplies. You will be able to work better if you have a neat place to work in.
